The rapid downward sliding state of politcal leadership in Argentina

I’ve had a few news links emailed to me. Reading these together illustrates the current lack of vision by Argentina’s current leadership – internal and foreign policy’s – set against the growing global food crisis and demand in the commodities market. Been one of the riches food reserves in the world, Argentina’s opportunity to start a real sustainability discussion or even capitalise, is not been realised. The lack of transparency in the government has the public concerned for the countries stability. They feel the country could slip into a potential economic melt down. Talk on the street puts inflation at 25% while the government maintains it at 9%.

Otros Aires and electronica tango in Buenos Aires

At the end of last year I discovered these guys – Otros Aires while exploring the vast record stores of Buenos Aires. Wishing to discover some of the local tunes beyond the hugely successful and godfathers of “electronica tango / electrotango” – the Gotan Project (video below). I was drawn to Otros Aires for the vocal sound and balance of the “electronica tango” mix – which is more in the traditional/classic tango camp than the electronic. That’s if you start comparing them against the Gotan Project’s DJ set: ‘Inspiración Espiraciónor the style of the project/group: Bajofondo (video below) – who incidentally are breaking out of “electronica tango” as they seek out a wider musical fusion – “we believe we do music of the Rio de la Plata” – liking there compositions to the modern day sights and sounds of Buenos Aires and Uruguay’s capital, Montevideo.

Otros Aires are coming to the end of mainly an European tour and last month I was lucky enough to catch live here in Buenos Aires. They were playing at very popular la Viruta, a night and day milonga which is always full of locals and dance tourists. In classic Buenos Aires style Otros Aires didn’t play until after midnight when all their other international gigs kick off at the early hours of 8.00pm!

Click here for a selection of images taken on the day the Olympic torch relay as it crashed its way through Buenos Aires, Argentina. Chinese red & gold and flags everywhere – not one official Olympic flag in sight.
